Welcome to a new day of peaceful skin and peace of mind.
You are trading in the flare-ups, confusion, and embarrassment of moody skin for peace, clarity, and confidence.
We're here with you, not just as guides, but as friends who've walked this path.
Your struggles are our struggles. You’re part of a community now. And soon we will celebrate with you as you reclaim your peaceful skin and peace of mind.
Peaceful Skin Timeline
What to Expect at Each Stage of Your Healing Journey
Every body is unique. While a lucky few may notice immediate relief, most of us will need to nurture our skin with two to four weeks of consistent care before we see a full recovery.
The Peaceful Skin Timeline below is based on daily treatment of your skin. If you spread out your treatments, your timeline will likely extend longer.
Remember, the goal is to create a daily ritual of self love. (You’re worth it!)
Let's dive into what you can expect at each stage of your healing journey…
Ingredients & Products to Avoid
Did you know some ingredients will inflame your skin and trigger flare-ups?
What you avoid in your skincare routine is just as important as what you include.
We’ve heard from several members of the Dermazen community who were using our products for the first time, but weren’t seeing complete relief.
After we asked about their skincare routine, it turned out they were using other products like bar soaps or creams made with fungus-feeding oils.
Once they removed the unsafe products from their routine, their flare-ups went away and their skin looked better than ever.
Most Important Ingredients to Avoid
Oils: Almost every oil on the planet contains fatty acids that will feed the malassezia fungus. This includes coconut, castor, almond, jojoba, and many more. To learn more about the science behind which oils feed the fungus and why, visit dermazen.co/oils.
✅ The only safe oils are squalane and MCT (without lauric acid).
Waxes and Butters: This includes beeswax, shea butter, cocoa butter, and more. These ingredients contain the same fungus-feeding fatty acids as most oils.
👆 Note: Oils, waxes, and butters only need to be avoided on areas where you experience symptoms of malassezia fungus, which usually occur around the face, scalp, and ears. So if you don’t get fungal symptoms on your hands, it’s perfectly alright to use a hand lotion with beeswax or coconut oil. 👇 But these chemical ingredients below should be avoided as often as possible across your body. |
Fragrances: The synthetic scents used in most skincare and haircare products have been proven to disrupt hormones, affecting everything from your emotional state to your physical health. They have also been strongly linked to neural disturbances (e.g., headache, depression, and migraine), various cancers, skin and respiratory hypersensitivity, liver and thyroid toxicity, reproductive problems, and more.
✅ Make sure you are using products that are scent-free or scented by essential oils or hydrosols.
Essential oils don’t contain any fatty acids so they don’t promote malassezia growth. However, many essential oils used in skincare products are made with carrier oils like jojoba which feed malassezia fungus. We make sure every essential oil we use is 100% pure without carrier oils.
Sulfates: These common lathering agents in beauty products remove essential moisture from your hair and skin, damage your skin barrier, and make your skin more sensitive to irritation. They also pose a risk to aquatic life and ecosystems when they enter our waterways. They’re harmful for you and the environment.
Parabens: These preservatives are known to mimic estrogen, interfere with hormonal balance, jeopardize fertility, impact the health of reproductive organs, alter birth outcomes, and elevate cancer risk.
Phthalates: These synthetic compounds are added to skincare products to improve their “spreadability.” They’ve been shown to disrupt fertility, initiate early puberty, and increase the risk of low birth weight, obesity, diabetes, and immune system disorders.
Our Promise to You
You deserve self-care products that support your health, not sabotage it.
When you treat your skin to any Dermazen formula, you can rest easy knowing every ingredient is safe, non-toxic, and designed to harmonize with your body.
We practice ingredient minimalism. Our goal is to keep our formulas as simple (zen) as possible while creating products more effective than anything else.
Every formula is designed with you, our loved ones, and the planet in mind.
How to Combine Products
The secret to keeping your skin peaceful is to treat your skincare like a team where every product plays a vital role.
Like putting together a puzzle, each piece supports the others, and together they create a picture of calm, healthy skin.
One product can help, but the real magic happens when you combine these formulas.
Face Protocol
To soothe your face, follow the mantra: cleanse, treat, moisturize.
- Cleanse: Starting with the gentle cleanser sweeps away dirt, oil, and fungus, creating a blank canvas for the other formulas to bless your skin while also giving relief from irritation.
- Treat: Applying the serum soothes your skin by focusing on the root cause of your condition, disrupting the biofilm, clearing away fungus, and soothing your skin.
- Moisturize: Finishing with the moisturizer will seal in the serum’s benefits while hydrating your skin, preventing excess oil, and protecting your skin barrier.
We recommend following these steps before bed so the ingredients can absorb into your skin before applying makeup (if that’s part of your daily routine), but this ritual works just as well at the start of your day.
You can repeat this process twice a day, but cleansing too often can be drying for some skin types, so we suggest cleansing once a day then using the serum and moisturizer twice a day for glowing skin.
Scalp Protocol
The ideal order for scalp care is more flexible since you might prefer to wash your hair at night, in the morning, or only once or twice each week (or less often for textured hair).
Your unique scalp care routine might require more customization than your facial care.
Use the following toggle button to reveal the general rule of thumb, depending on if you have textured hair or straight/wavy hair:
I have textured hair.
I have straight/wavy hair.
- Treat: Apply the serum and massage it into your scalp thoroughly the night before (or at least two hours before) you plan to wash your hair - even if that is every week or two.
- Moisturize: Following up with MCT Scalp Moisturizer right away, seals in the benefits of the serum, hydrates your scalp, prevents excess oil, and stimulates new hair growth.
- Optional Leave-In: Some folks with textured hair use the serum and scalp moisturizer as leave-in products, since the holistic ingredients will naturally absorb into your scalp for lasting relief. Everyone is different, so we recommend trying these products as leave-ins to see how they work with your hairstyle.
- Wash / Rinse: When the time to wash your hair, using the Cleansing Dandruff Shampoo will remove the MCT moisturizer, oil from your scalp, dirt, and fungus while refreshing your scalp, nourishing your hair, and supporting new hair growth. While the MCT moisturizer will need a shampoo in order to be washed out, the serum can be rinsed out with water either with a full rinse or with a wet washcloth in between braids across the scalp.
- Treat: Applying the serum before bed soothes your scalp by focusing on the root cause of your condition, disrupting the biofilm, clearing away fungus, and soothing your skin. If you shower at night, make sure the serum soaks into your scalp for at least two hours before washing it out.
- Moisturize: Following up with MCT moisturizer right away, seals in the benefits of the serum, hydrates your scalp, prevents excess oil, and stimulates new hair growth.
- Cleanse: Washing with the shampoo (in the morning or after 2+ hours) removes the dried serum, MCT moisturizer, oil from your scalp, dirt, and fungus while refreshing your scalp, nourishing your hair, and supporting new hair growth.

To further calm your scalp and prevent dandruff, wash with the Cleansing Dandruff Shampoo.
When treating your face, first wash with the Purifying Facial Cleanser before applying the serum, then protect your skin’s peace with the Soothing Malassezia Moisturizer after the serum.
Stinging Is Possible & Natural
If your skin is inflamed, you might experience a stinging sensation from the sea salt and tea tree essential oil. This is normal - we’ve all felt salt in a wound before.
Fortunately, the aloe and other soothing ingredients will usually calm any discomfort within a minute or two. And as your skin heals over the next few treatments, the stinging will become less intense or disappear completely.
If your skin is extra sensitive and the stinging feels unbearable, you can dilute the serum by 50% with purified water and apply it to your skin. The serum is our strongest formula, so there are many folks in the Dermazen community who have seen great results with a diluted serum.

*We recommend only washing your baby’s scalp with a cleansing formula free from oils that will feed the fungus causing their symptoms. Using a shampoo - even a natural one - made with oils can make your infant’s scalp flare up (we’ve seen it on our own babies).
Our goal is to release a cradle-cap friendly baby wash in 2024. Until then, several team members with babies use the Purifying Facial Cleanser as a safe, gentle shampoo and body wash for our little ones.

- After the roller ball glides along your skin, allow the holistic ingredients to absorb into your pores and soothe your skin.

1. Apply a generous amount of the scalp moisturizer to your scalp before bed (or at least two hours before washing), massaging it in with love.
2. In the morning, rinse your hair with water or wash with a malassezia-safe shampoo before styling.
For textured hair, this scalp moisturizer also works great as a leave-in since the ingredients will naturally absorb into your skin. Especially for protective styles! Simply apply it 2-3x a week (or daily if you’d like) to keep your scalp happy and healthy.
For Best Results
